Relapse Prevention Coaching

As anyone living with addiction knows it can be very challenging to ask for help, develop an effective recovery program and then maintain it. This becomes even more difficult when clients leave treatment to return home, or for those who found that traditional outpatient programs are not sufficient to effectively prevent a relapse from occurring, or to stop a relapse once it starts.

The purpose of our Relapse Prevention Coaching Programs is to offer 1 on 1 individualized coaching to people who want to recover from an addiction and the use of self-defeating, self-destructive behaviors. The programs are especially helpful for individuals who have had relapse episodes, but anyone in recovery will find it useful to improve their skills at recognizing and effectively managing situations that put their recovery at risk.

To this end Dr. Grinstead and his team offer Relapse Prevention Coaching Programs for the following disorders:

  • chronic pain and coexisting disorders including
prescription drug abuse or prescription drug addiction,

  • alcohol & other drugs, and

  • eating addiction.

These programs will assist individuals leaving treatment and support those people who cannot or chose not to go into traditional treatment programs.

Our Relapse Prevention Coaching Programs are also invaluable for people who have had limited success with outpatient treatment, or who want to learn powerful relapse prevention tools to enhance the program they are already in. With the assistance of Dr. Grinstead and their Relapse Prevention Coach, clients will experience the seven powerful clinical processes that help them to quickly identify and manage high-risk situations that cause relapse. Participants will receive expert guidance in setting powerful recovery goals and implementing specific actions plans to facilitate their continued recovery.

The foundation of our Relapse Prevention Coaching Program is the evidence-based work and 35 years experience of Terence T. Gorski's Developmental Model of Recovery. As an Advanced Relapse Prevention Specialist and Director of Training and Consultation for the CENAPS® Corporation, Dr. Stephen F. Grinstead's expertise in denial, relapse prevention and co-existing disorders underlie his biopsychosocial, multidisciplinary approach utilizing an ongoing continuum of care that incorporates strategic, cognitive-behavioral skill building exercises in conjunction with powerful solution-focused and strength-based coaching methodologies.

Relapse Prevention Continuing Care Coaching is offered in three Phases meeting weekly and bi-weekly over the course of one year (40 weeks), including a one hour intake consultation with Dr. Grinstead and three one hour exit interview sessions with a Certified Relapse Prevention Coach after each Phase. Optional “as needed” individual coaching sessions may be added for an additional fee with either Dr. Grinstead or one of his team. All sessions are conducted by phone through a conference call service.

The Relapse Prevention Coaching Program begins with a 50 minute phone intake session and consists of 13 sessions followed by an exit interview.

The CENAPS® Relapse Prevention Workbooks are used as integral components in the Relapse Prevention Coaching Programs and will be required prior to the first session. By participating in either program, Clients will:

  • Develop a personalized relapse intervention plan that includes building an initial relapse prevention network.

  • Sign a specific Abstinence Contract, Medication Management Agreement, or a Healthy Living Agreement and develop a plan to stop relapse quickly should it occur.

  • Identify and personalize immediate high risk situations that can cause relapse in spite of a commitment to recovery.

  • Map out past high risk situations that were managed in a way that led to relapse and identify the thoughts, feelings, urges, actions, and relationship patterns (TFUAR's) that caused them to use in order to manage those high risk situations.

  • Develop a plan to manage high risk thoughts and feelings that could lead to a relapse in order to manage future high risk situations.

  • Create an in-depth plan to manage future high risk situations without relapsing and develop a recovery plan that supports the identification and management of future high risk situations.

  • Develop a personal action plan for implementing what they learned in the coaching process in order to enhance their ongoing recovery.

After completing either the Continue Care or Relapse Prevention Programs, and for an additional fee, participants will have an opportunity to build upon all they have learned with our on-going Life Coaching Recovery Process for those who are ready to create a new life plan beyond addiction and take action to achieve it.

Life Coaching Recovery Process
The Life Coaching Recovery Process builds upon the work completed in either of the Relapse Prevention Coaching Programs. It is an opportunity to solidify your learning and so you can begin to look beyond your addiction and see what goals and dreams you want to pursue now that you have a stable relapse recovery plan in place. Participation in our Life Coaching Recovery Process is not limited to those who have completed the Continue Care Program. Filling out the Coaching Questionnaire and completing a short interview will determine if you are eligible join.

Something for all potential participants to remember: the Life Coaching Recovery Process requires personal motivation and commitment. Some people may need more intensive counseling or psychotherapy instead of coaching, or inaddition to it. There are certain circumstances where Life Coaching is invaluable to that work. Others will find that our Life Coaching Recovery Process is exactly right for them. Either way, the Life Coaching Recovery Process will provide participants with valuable education and new skill sets to support them in their recovery. To find out if this is the right direction for you, please fill out the brief coaching questionnaire. Dr. Grinstead's office will contact you for a brief intake consultation.

If you have any questions about either of our Coaching Programs or the Life Coaching Recovery Process, please give us a call at (916) 575-9961. Please listen to what attorney Sara Nichols and Dr. Jennifer Messier have to say about our Coaching Services.
