Welcome

To the August Issue of “Chronic Pain Solutions,” our Addiction-Free Pain Management® Newsletter. We hope everyone is having a wonderful Summer. We have a busy Fall ahead of us and welcome the opportunities to bring the APM System to healthcare professionals around the country. Each month we will continue to update you on our projects and the latest news stories and research we have on our website regarding pain management and the coexisting disorders that accompany someone living with chronic pain, as well as upcoming events and trainings.
We always appreciate your input and would love to hear from you. From the Contact Us page feel free to email any questions or comments. In fact, we plan to answer those questions that would be of interest to our readers' starting in September. Stay Tuned!
We wanted to bring to your attention an upcoming event that may be of interest. It's The 8th International Conference on Pain and Chemical Dependency (ICPCD) to be held October 29 – November 1, 2008 at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel in Philadelphia, PA. The ICPCD conference was formed as professionals came together to meet and learn with others involved in managing care at the interface of pain and chemical dependency. To find out more about the organization and the conference, check out their promotional video.
Gorski-CENAPS Corporation

One of the fastest growing areas of the Gorski-CENAPS® Corporation is their home study programs which allow professionals to earn ongoing CEU's by studying published books or specialty prepared course materials. Gorski Home Studies also serve as an avenue to recertify your Gorski-CENAPS® credential. Take any Gorski Home Study course totaling 20 CEU's, pass the post-test and you will be recertified.
There are approximately 25 courses now available based on Gorski-CENAPS® materials that represent source documentation for The Gorski-CENAPS® Model of Recovery and Relapse Prevention. Gorski Home Studies is in the process of developing additional CEU's courses for many of the books that are instrumental in building skills that addiction and behavioral health professionals need to stay current in their field. For more information, call 352-596-8000 or visit the CENAPS site.
APM Coaching Groups

Dr. Grinstead and his team are also offering telephone Coaching Services to assist individuals living with chronic pain and coexisting disorders including prescription drug abuse or prescription drug addiction in setting Addiction-Free Pain Management® (APM) goals and implementing specific actions plans. These services are especially helpful for individuals who cannot participate in residential treatment, or who need additional support during their outpatient or continuing care programs. Coaching by phone can also be a very valuable tool for people who live in rural areas.
This will be accomplished by offering three Phases of APM Coaching including an individual 1 hour phone intake consultation session and three one hour individual exit interview telephone coaching sessions after each phase. Optional “as needed” individual telephone coaching sessions may be added for an additional fee. All group sessions are conducted by phone through a conference call service. If you have any questions or would like more information, please give us a call at (916) 575-9961.
APM Centers of Excellence

In our
APM Center of Excellence (COE) program we are dedicated to bringing together and training treatment teams to address the challenges patients and their families face when dealing with chronic pain and co-existing disorders, including addiction. Collaboration is the fundamental principal guiding this program. It is our founding principal; the key that unlocks the potential for successful treatment outcomes between patients and their healthcare providers, as well as providing patient access across the United States and Canada.
APM Centers of Excellence include an integrated continuum of treatment services. They have identifiable systems designed to meet the needs of patients who require varying levels of care. The Center of Excellence protocols are designed to incorporate biopsychosocial approaches to assessment and recovery planning, developmental stages of recovery, relapse intervention and prevention.
Two of our Current Licensees Sierra Tucson in Tucson, AZ and Valley Forge Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA are continuing to progress toward full Center of Excellence Designation with scheduled site visits and additional training this fall.
Training Opportunities

As we mentioned last month and in a recent Training Update, we are excited about the upcoming Addiction-Free Pain Management® Three Day Certification Trainings being sponsored this fall in collaboration with the
Institute of Chemical Dependency Studies and the
Gorski-CENAPS® Corporation. A BIG thank you as well to our co-sponsors and APM Center of Excellence Licensees, Sierra Tucson and Valley Forge Medical Center. The trainings will be held in New York City, Tampa, Houston and Dallas. See the calendar for the current schedule. To register or for more information email anne@cdstudies.com or call Anne at 866-523-2669. You can also download a Registration Application

Take a few minutes and review ICDS's Recovery Today magazine. If you want to keep receiving it you can register for a free on-line subscription. Also, a great place to visit is Mr. Gorski's site. His Links page lists quite a number of resources to aid in addiction research.
News and Research
New Acupuncture Research and Chronic Pain Management: Since the 1970's, acupuncture has been practiced in the United States by licensed acupuncturists, physicians, dentists, and other practitioners. It has been used to treat a wide variety of health conditions, as well as to maintain an optimal state of health. Based on clinical experience, the World Health Organization lists more than 40 conditions for which acupuncture might be considered, including a variety of digestive, gynecological, neurological, respiratory, and psychological conditions. Recently I came across an article by Alan Spira titled "Acupuncture: A Useful Tool for Health Care in an Operational Medicine Environment. . . ."
Cymbalta Approved for Fibromyalgia: In June of 2008 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved duloxetine HCl delayed-release capsules (Cymbalta) for the management of fibromyalgia. Previously, only pregabalin (Lyrica; Pfizer, Inc) was approved to treat this painful condition. Some see this as a major victory in validating fibromyalgia as a legitimate diagnosis while others see this as a greed-driven pharmaceutical ploy. Having worked with many patients who were diagnosed and living with the pain and problems of fibromyalgia I am firmly in the first camp. . . .
Hypnosis in Medicine and Chronic Pain Management: Hypnosis has been an effective tool for many medical conditions including chronic pain management. However, there are significant mistaken beliefs about this procedure. One comes from the movie industry's portrayal of hypnosis as entertainment and deception. In reality, the facts bear out that hypnosis is a well respected clinical tool throughout the medical field as demonstrated by the 50th Anniversary of American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH) last year and the report below by one of their members, Dr. Mark B Weisberg. The report is titled "50 Years of Hypnosis in Medicine and Clinical Health Psychology: a Synthesis of Cultural Crosscurrents. . . ."
